Grenada Discovery Train

We had decided that we were going to tour St.George and the Carenage today - which included historic Fort George and the National Museum. We were going to walk the whole thing - not do the 'tourist thing' which was taking the 'Grenada Discovery Train'. However, as we started our walk, it pulled up - and you know me - I am a sucker for anything fun - whether the 'train' in Chemanius or the horse and carriage in Cuba - so might as well as the 'Grenada Train'!

We boarded the train, which in the end, worked out really well. You can get on and off of the train anywhere along it's route - and you are free to wander and pick up the next one - or the one after that - or the one after...

The train ticket also includes admission to Fort George and the National Museum. We enjoyed the tour of the Fort - not only does it have a long history of the fight between England and France for the treasures of the Caribbean - but it is also the site where Maurice Bishop and his followers were executed in the 1983 Rebellion - before the US intervened.  Currently the fort is a historical site and the headquarters of the Royal Grenada Police.

From Fort George, we made our way back down the hill and headed to the National Museum. As museums go, it was pretty interesting - and had a lot of background on the history of Grenada. From the museum, we hopped back on the train and took another loop which took us past the fire station and several historic buildings.

Lastly, we headed towards the Esplanade, where the cruise ships came in. While we didn't see any ships, we checked out some shops and had a late lunch at the 'Creole Shack' which is actually a cafeteria restaurant upstairs from the Food Faire Grocery store. It was filled with locals - and the prices were unbelieveably reasonable. After that, we made our way back through St.George and the Carenage and then headed back to our home away from home.
